Yangshuo by bicycle: choose the river before the route

Put the right river on the plan

The Chinese Tourist Office recommends a short bicycle outing along the Yulong River. Yangshuo is also a stopping point for Li River boat trips. They can be part of the same holiday, but a riverside ride, a bamboo-raft booking and a Li River cruise are not interchangeable activities.

Start your planning message with the place you mean: Yulong River (遇龙河), Li River (漓江) or Yangshuo town (阳朔县城). Add the hotel pin. Keep the Chinese names on your phone so a driver or rental shop can check the same location.

Four points to mark before leaving

Ask for a map showing the bicycle collection point, the riding start, an agreed turnaround and the return point. If these are different places, work out the connection before collecting the bike. Ask which sections have been checked for bicycle access and which use roads shared with motor vehicles.

For a group with different confidence levels, request a shorter first section and an agreed place to reassess. A scenic lane is not enough information: ask about the surface, junctions, climbs and places to stop clear of traffic. Do not accept a kilometre total without knowing the roads behind it.

If you add time on the water

Treat the raft or boat as a separate booking. Confirm the meeting point, departure and finish, current operation, and who looks after the bikes. Do not assume a boat operator will transport them or that the trip ends beside your rental shop. Ask how non-riders rejoin the group.

A useful message to send

Write down your dates, exact accommodation, each rider's height and experience, the vehicle you want and whether a river activity matters more than riding distance. Ask what changes in wet or very hot weather. Request the actual rental model and legal vehicle category; an electric scooter and a pedal-assist bicycle are different requests.

This is an original editorial planning guide, not a report of a guest trip or a surveyed route. Rental stock, prices, guiding language, transfers, entry rules and boat operation need current confirmation. The photograph shows the Yulong River landscape and does not prove access along a particular bank.
