Erhai: the ecological corridor and east-shore roads are different rides

Before renting in Dali, choose the shore and check the vehicle. A west-corridor outing and a road ride need different access, traffic and return arrangements.

Erhai: the ecological corridor and east-shore roads are different rides

Replace 'around Erhai' with a start and finish

The phrase 'lake loop' hides the most useful planning decision: where you will actually ride. Ask for the shore, entrance and exit, proposed vehicle and road names. A short return ride on the west side and a public-road journey elsewhere are different days.

Dali's August 2025 management notice names the west-corridor area from Yangnanxi (阳南溪) to Taoyuan (桃源), and entrances including Caicun (才村) and Longkan (龙龛). Use the names to clarify a meeting point, then check current access with the operator. The notice's historical management length is not a recommended daily distance.

Check the vehicle category with the corridor operator

The notice includes enforcement against unauthorised motor and electric vehicles entering the corridor. Do not interpret a rental shop's 'e-bike' sign as entry permission. Ask whether the actual vehicle, including a privately rented pedal-assist bicycle, is allowed on the intended section. If that cannot be confirmed, choose a permitted bicycle or another legal route.

Also ask where the rental business is authorised to operate. The same notice addresses unauthorised rental activities within the corridor. A convenient roadside collection point is not enough assurance.

Think about the return before you ride out

For an out-and-back, agree where to turn and check the return deadline. For a one-way ride, confirm the permitted return location and how the riders and bikes travel from the finish. Ask about any extra charge before starting. Keep the shop's location and contact details saved.

On east-shore or other public roads, request a separate explanation of junctions, traffic, climbing and stopping places. The west corridor's recreational reputation should not be used to label another road easy.

What the final plan should say

It should name the allowed vehicle, permitted sections, collection and return points, weather-change option and total rental terms. Add the actual available model and size, helmet, deposit or damage conditions, and any transport that has been confirmed. Distance, ascent, prices and hours remain to be verified.

This is an original editorial guide, not a guest account or an inspected all-lake route. The cover shows an east-shore landscape and should not be read as a photograph of the west corridor or proof that electric vehicles are admitted.
